September Monthly Program
Understanding Your Emotions During Negotiations with Employees
September 16, 2010
Guest Speaker: Jacob Fulcher, Partner with Kahn, Dees, Donovan & Kahn, LLP
Mr. Fulcher’s topic will center around HR professionals and their understanding of emotions in conflict management. Every day, HR professionals at various levels deal with conflict. Whether it be discussing an employee's request for FMLA leave or terminating an employee for misconduct, HR professionals need to understand the emotions in conflict / negotiation. In the presentation, Mr. Fulcher will discuss using and understanding emotions in conflict. We will learn what it is like to "defect" in a conflict and what influence, if any, that has on future dealings. Program participants will organize into groups of 4 and play a negotiations game where emotion and conflict are present and analyze the various responses of the groups. The presentation is based on two books that the attorneys of Kahn, Dees, Donovan & Kahn believe are essential for attorneys to read, Getting to Yes and Beyond Reason.
